SCHOOL’S OUT – COVER (1972) (Art Design: Craig Braun) Braun’s design agency, who also handled the implementation of Warhol’s concept for Sticky Fingers, are the visionaries of the interactive school desk design for Alice Cooper’s classic rock LP. Lifting the lid of the desk (i.e cover), you could then slide the record out to view the contents of the desk’s innards; the back cover contains “legs” of the desk that could be opened allowing it to stand alone. Also of note is the pair of paper panties that covered the actual record, which was eventually discontinued in future releases of the record as they were found to be flammable. Safety first!
Note: Alice Cooper’s School’s Out was the first interactive album personally owned by the curator, however, it served primarily as a launch-pad for a Kenner Star Wars X-Wing toy for many years.
